The Spokane Alumnae Chapter was organized under the leadership of Dr. Ruth Gossett, a Professor in the Social Work Department of Eastern Washington University, in the fall of 1978. Dr. Gossett met individually with Sorors in the Spokane and surrounding communities to meet socially, and to solicit their support for a local chapter. Numerous meetings were held at her house  in Cheney, Washington to formulate plans for the chartering of the Spokane Alumnae Chapter.  Members traveled to Cheney, 20 miles from Spokane , and to Pasco, Washington to meet with one of our senior members, Delores Goodman, who was the president of the local N.A.A.C.P. Chapter.  Immediately the Sorors gave their support to one of her cases involving a young man.

Finally, on July 14, 1979, the Spokane Alumnae Chapter was officially granted its charter.  Soror Addie Jean Haynes, Far West Regional Director and Sorors from the Seattle Alumnae Chapter participated in the chartering service. The Service area for the Spokane Alumnae Chapter includes Pullman, Moses Lake, and Moscow, Idaho. As a small chapter, it immediately became active and a reception was held in the fall of 1979, introducing the Chapter to the community. The Chartering President was Rebecca Williams, and the first President of the new chapter was Jeanne Aston. In addition, the community was invited to a Farewell Dinner recognizing the accomplishments of Dr. Ruth Gossett. Soror T. Marie Floyd, Seattle, attended that celebration.

Since its inception, many of the energetic and service conscious members have made their presence known by their dedication to extend and vitalize Delta’s commitment to public service.  Delta’s many services and programs have benefited the citizens of the Spokane community for 32 years. The Spokane Alumnae Chapter has collaboration with such organizations as the Links, Inc., N.A.A.C.P. The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Annual programs have been our Voter Registration, Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy, Women’s Health Screening Fairs, Scholarship Awards, Jamaican Prep School, Katrina Coalition of Spokane, East Central Community Center’s Christmas Dinner, Effective Black Parenting Classes, and Tutorial Programs.
